i) 蛋白质

5）HPW Diet

<img width='1' height='1' It is open to negotiations, but please be reasonable! There was a guy who smsed me asking if he could get a pair for RM550, which is RM275 each. I'm sorry, but I feed them on high quality sugar glider food (HPW) with fresh fruits and vegetables everyday and I had to import them in from KL. RM275 is not quite enough to cover for their expenses, not to mention my time and love devoted to them.

And please respect sugar gliders-- they are living creatures too. I won't expect you to treat them as equals (would be great if you can, because they are highly intelligent) but at least respect the fact that they feel pain and fear too. It's very unfunny if you scare them just to see their reaction-- not only will you make the sugar glider fear you, they will not be able to trust you as wholly.

Interested parties, please call 0168880419.

Thank you. :)

Picture of the Day #3

Bark bark~ I want attention!

11/11/09 - 30/11/09

'Birth of Honey Gliders/Honey Gliders 开张'
Promotion

RM800
Package includes:
- 1 male sugar glider
- 1 female sugar glider
- 1 packet of HPW
- 1 sleeping pouch

Save up to RM108!!

Why should you buy from Honey Gliders?
Because we offer after purchase services (such as advice, support and free boarding if you have to go outstation) and our sugar gliders are fed on HPW diet, which is a diet approved by many.

Why are you promoting pairs?
Well, for a simple reason: They like having another sugar glider around. Someone from the same species to keep them happy... I would recommend neutering the male, but I don't know any vets in Kch that will operate on sugar gliders. I picked a male & a female instead of same sex pairings is because a male and male pairing may result in fighting, and some people may purchase two females (since it's at a discounted price) and get a male to breed them...

Picture of the Day #2

Sugar gliders are extremely curious & inquisitive by nature. :)

Update #1

Hey all! Can find at most market places, high in calcium.

Ciku - A sweet treat, not all gliders may like ciku.

Pineapple - Give small amounts like once a week. Only feed very ripe pineapples. Never feed more than a cube. The enzymes benefits the digestion.

Sugar Apple/Custard Apple - Google to find the picture. This fruit is grown locally, is high in calcium and very sweet. But make sure you scrub it well!

Persimmon - Good fiber, calcium and phosphorus level also same.

Grapes - Only give seedless ones. scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Glider Bonding'/>
The beginning of a friendship.

Don't expect your glider to be tame and loving towards you from the moment you bring your glider home. A bond between people and a bond between animals are the same: It takes time. You need to spend as much time as you can with your new glider so that your glider will learn to trust you. All bonds are based on trust. And trust takes time to build.

Let me tell you how your sugar glider will act the first day you bring it home. It will hide in a corner or pouch, and when you get too close, it will crab at you. This will continue until your glider realizes that you are not a threat and you are not going to hurt him.

My gliders were so scary the first day I got them, but most of them have gotten used to me and do not make such a big fuss when I get near them anymore. But remember, they WILL attack you and will CRAB at you and may BITE you. TIP: Put honey on your finger and let them lick it off your finger. That way, they will learn that your fingers mean good. :)

One of my gliders can recognize me now, he always calls to me and then waits for me to take him out of the cage. It's so sweet. ♥

Remember, do not aggravate your sugar glider by blowing at it, making loud noises, moving suddenly or hurting them. Doing the aforementioned things WILL hurt your bond with your sugar glider.

The more time you spend with your glider, the stronger your bond will become. Good luck!

Watch this video:　http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlTnAULD9PY
看这个ｖｉｄｅｏ：http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlTnAULD9PY

Q & A #1

Where can I buy a trained sugar glider? I just wanted to know where I can find a breeder/pet store that sells trained sugar gliders. When I say trained I mean can fly, dosen't bark and bite you when you pick it up, doesn't runaway when you open the cage.

Fly: They don't FLY, they glide. They won't glide to you unless they trust you, so you would need to do something called WORK. I know it sounds hard, but it's possible!

Doesn't Bark: Sugar gliders bark for a few reasons. One is for attention, sometimes they bark because they need help (if they get stuck in threads or something, which you would need to help them get out of or pay a huge vet bill), or because they want to hear themselves 'talk.' Don't expect a glider not to bark.

Doesn't Bite: You have to WORK to get that result. You need to develop a bond with the gliders for them not to bite you. Some are pouch protective, no matter how bonded they are to their owner, and some will still bite when you put your hand in their pouch. Biting is something they'll always do, because some of them give love bites. Doesn't hurt at all and makes you feel really special, but it's still considered nipping or biting.

Doesn't run away: Some gliders don't want to be in their cage. I heard of someone that would try to put their glider back in the cage after play time and it refused. Does work sound familiar?

You can't just expect for them to be tame, ESPECIALLY if you get one from a pet store.
If you want all of those traits when you first get one, then you shouldn't have any.

Taken from Yahoo.

Business Card

Do you have a business card/can I have your business card?

Well, here you go! :D My business card!

Front

Back

Bonding 101

Tip #1: Let your sugar glider get used to its new cage and home first. At least give them 1-3 days before you start your bonding.

Tip #2: Successful bonding takes time and patience. Don't think in measurements of "days and weeks," instead, think in measurements of "weeks and months," perhaps even longer if your sugar glider has a history of abuse.

Tip #3: House your sugar glider in a room that feels safe to him or her during the transition period as you introduce yourself to your new pet. The goal is to establish your pet's trust and feeling of security, so choose a location that is safe from electrical noises and heavy traffic, in order to avoid unnecessary alarm and disturbance.

Tip #4: Remember that each sugar glider has a unique personality with distinct playtime likes and dislikes, and as such, may require a unique approach to bonding. So if you find that one approach isn't working, try something new! Don't accept a cookie-cutter approach to bonding. Be flexible and experiment with new ideas!

Tip #5: Place your sugar glider in your shirt pocket (or bonding pouch) during his or her daytime napping period to permit your pet to get used to your scent and sounds. At nighttime, he or she will want to be active and will not want to be confined to your pocket or bonding pouch. So, place an unwashed clothing item you have recently worn (like a t-shirt) on top of the cage to help your sugar glider become accustomed to your scent. Keep in mind, some sugar gliders are cloth-shredders, so you'll want to closely watch your pet's behavior.

Tip #6: Use your sugar glider's relatively less active daytime period as an opportunity for you to touch and pet your groggy nocturnal animal. This helps him or her become accustomed to your touch and feel, as well as your scent.

Tip #7: Although sugar gliders will always be nocturnal, they may be disturbed for brief periods of time during the day for human contact. (Expect some crabbing at first though!) Daytime can be the ideal time to interact with your sugar glider while he/she is a bit dazed and slower to move. However, remember to keep your sugar glider protected from bright lights.

Tip #8: You can train your sugar glider to automatically wake up earlier in the evening by consistently arousing him or her at that time each day.
。xD

Tip #9: Don't grab at your sugar glider to pick it up. Instead, offer it your cupped hand or back hand (palm down) to permit your pet to approach you in confidence.

Tip #10: Use treats as a positive reinforcer to entice your sugar glider to come at the sound of your voice. Of course, be sure that you are making a good dietary choice and not ultimately creating a bigger feeding problem for your sugar glider.

Tip #11: Never use a negative reinforcer with your sugar glider under any circumstances. Punishment (like hitting, thumping, and squirting with water) is both abusive and unnecessary, and can consequently damage your bonding relationship.

Tip #12: Wear two shirts, placing the young joey between them on your chest or belly, to permit the baby sugar glider to become accustomed to your scent and sounds. In addition, he/she will likely feel very secure snuggled between the two layers of fabric against your warm body.

Fun Fact #1

Sugar Gliders can glide up to 45 meters (148.5 ft.) and can even catch moths while they glide!

Mealworms

Sugar gliders LOVE mealworms. So if you want to cut costs (a container of worms is about RM10), you can choose to rear the worms yourself.

Here's how: (Taken from http://www.rfadventures.com/sugar_glider_pets.htm, you can also read more at http://www.petsugargliders.com/worm.php)

Mealworms

Mealworms are the larval stages of a common darkling beetle and are pests of flour, meal, grain and related products. They vary in size from the very small, newly hatched worms to full grown larvae that are approximately an inch long.

These worms may be easily raised at home by following a few suggestions.

An initial supply may be obtained from dealers or found in feed, grain, or meal in a barn or feed room. A wooden box or box eight to ten inches deep, twenty four inches long and eighteen inches wide makes a satisfactory rearing container. This box should be half-filled with fine meal or flour to which some middlings or bran is added. A few scraps of cloth or wrinkled paper will assist in preventing the meal from packing too solidly.

Proper ventilation and a fairly even temperature are essential to prevent mold growth. Cheese cloth tied over the tray will provide ventilation while preventing the escape of the adult beetles. A two inch strip of sheet metal should be securely nailed to the inside walls of the tray above the food mixture to prevent the insects from crawling over the side.

Some moisture is necessary. This may be best provided by the addition of some moist foods such as pieces of raw potatoes, carrots, ripe apples or banana peels. These should be placed on the surface of the mixture and slightly dampened every few days.

After the tray has been prepared and mealworms added, the tray should remain undisturbed for several weeks to allow the worms to develop. The larger worms will then have changed into the pale, quiet stage which later changes into the adult. The colony should then be prepared for expansion. A little bran may be sprinkled on the surface of the mixture and a few pieces of apple and carrot added followed by a second sprinkling of bran. A close watch should be kept for several weeks until a number of adult beetles appear.

Another tray should then be provided, prepared with the same food mixture as in the first. The adults should be placed in this tray to lay eggs for more young worms. As soon as these young worms have grown sufficiently to be handled they should be put in the first tray and allowed to grow as large as desired. By using a two tray system, one should be able to provide a continuous supply of worms.

The food mixtures must be discarded, the trays cleaned and scoured, and a freshly prepared food mixture put in occasionally for the successful rearing of the worms. Old food mixtures will become foul unless occasionally changed.

Sugar Glider Joeys for Sale!

Male or female? They have a real, physical need for close companionship of their own kind, and should not be kept singly. Yes, if you spend hours and hours with your glider every single day, he might seem to be perfectly happy. But even if he is, what happens if you suddenly can't be there all the time? If you had to be in the hospital for week, or unexpectedly go out of town, would there be anyone else who could give your glider the daily attention he needs?

Think about it this way. Imagine that you are being taken to another planet, to live there for the rest of your life. You will never again return to earth. You won't even be able to communicate with another human being, let alone see or touch one. The aliens from this planet are very friendly and caring and promise to take good care of you and spend lots of time with you every day, and provide for all your needs.

Can you honestly say you could be happy there without the companionship of another human? For the rest of your life? Humans also have a high need for companionship of their own kind, so it really shouldn't be that difficult for us to understand this same need in gliders, should it?

Don't buy one glider to save yourself money. If you want to save money, sugar gliders isn't meant for you at all.

Remember, having two won't prevent them from bonding with you, and in fact will reduce their stress level so they can bond with you better. And you can't hug, play, accompany them they way another sugar glider can. Two won't cost any more to take care of than one, they're just as easy to carry around with you, and they're twice as much fun. And if you can't be with them for any reason, they still have each other.

Suggie Foods

All of these are ready stock.

HPW Diet

Read more about HPW here.

This portion makes one batch of HPW™ and should last one glider approximately 3 - 4 months.

The benefits of this diet include less odor and healthier gliders with beautiful coats.

Premium Sugar Glider Diet

This balanced, highly nutritional and diversified Sugar glider food was developed with the help of animal nutritionalists and veterinarians. Overall height 12.3".
Best for sugar gliders, rats, squirrels, large hamsters and small hedgehogs.

Rodents are attracted to the wheel's entry holes - which also offer a really nifty effect when watching them run. Hamsters avoid broken legs and strangulations. Sugar gliders go absolutely nuts on these wheels. Even rats love running since they don't get their feet hurt and their tails whacked by unsafe axle supports. The semi-enclosed design and the solid rear wall also makes rodents, who are natural "wall-huggers," feel much safer as they run.

Wodent Wheels are easily disassembled for cleaning and are constructed of tough, safe plastic with a stable base of heavy-gauge painted (baked-on powder coated) steel. Wodent Wheels are low cost, much safer and quieter than conventional wire exercise wheels, and have a clean, simple design using recycled and recyclable plastics. If they aren't being attacked by chewers, with a little care Wodent Wheels will last for years.

Wodent Wheels are not recommended for gerbils and chinchillas with chewing problems.

Why Wodent Wheel?
Simply because other wheels aren't safe for sugar gliders because of their long prehensile tail.

Wodent Wheel Senior: RM110 each, shipping to Kuching included.

Male or Female?

Males 男

Males have sent glands located on their neck, chest, anus, and forehead, used to mark their territory. Here is a care sheet for you to print out for quick references.

I. Handling

Sugar Gliders are fragile creatures but they can be easily handled. Make sure that the Sugar Glider is used to being held and does not nip before you let a child handle them. Sugar Gliders are nocturnal making them easier to handle early in the mornings just before they go to sleep or before they normally get up at night. If you work with them daily they will become familiar with your scent and become more trusting. Soon they will become your best friend. They love to be cuddled and pet. You can carry them around the house in a loose shirt pocket or on a shoulder. Make sure they have a place to crawl into if they feel insecure or just need to rest. It has been suggested that you can carry your Sugar Glider around in your pants pockets. I would strongly advise against this. You may forget about them and sit down wrong, seriously injuring your pet.

II. HOUSING

A. Cage requirements
Before you buy any cage, you should consider the following: food placement, bedding, shelter, and exercise area. Make sure food holders are large enough to keep food in but too small for your pet to sit in and possibly soil the food as they eat. Always replace perishable items on a daily basis as spoiled food attracts bugs and can make your pet ill. Sugar Gliders also need a nest box to sleep in during the day and protect them from the sun. This is important since prolonged exposure to sunlight can kill a Sugar Glider. If you mount the nest box up high in the cage, make sure there is room for your pet to climb on top of it. It is possible for them to tear their thin gliding membrane by rubbing their elbows on the roof. For good bedding materials, choose dry moss, cotton, leaves from a live branch, or even wood shavings. Whatever you use, make sure that it is natural and doesn't pose a threat to your pet. Your Sugar Glider should have a cage that will allow plenty of room for exercise. The wire spacing should be no more than 1"x1/2" wide. This is to keep babies in. Over-all the cage should be at least 20"x20"x36". There should be a wire bottom to allow droppings to fall through. Keep them away from drafts or heating/air-conditioning vents to prevent them from catching colds. The best temperature range is 60-90 degrees F. If you have a door on the cage that lifts open, make sure you put a latch on it. Your pet will figure out how to open it and so can little children.

B. Climb/play things
Sugar Gliders have a natural need to climb and chew on live tree branches. They are useful for exercise and keeping their nails trimmed. Be careful which branches you choose. Toxic branches include Almond, Apricot, Black Walnut, Cherry, and Peach. You can go to your local pet store and find bird toys or other small animal toys that your pet can climb, push, or carry around. For the best reaction, place new things high in the cage. Do not use cloth materials. They may eat loose threads or become entangled in them.

IV. NUTRITION

A. Nutritional requirements
Gliders require a solid 75% fruit/vegetable and 25% protein diet. You need to keep their fat intake to a minimum. It can result in health problems later on and in any babies. Canned fruit is NOT an option because it contains preservatives and refined sugar which are harmful.

B. Suggested food items
Sugar Gliders are fond of many different types of food. Some that they particularly enjoy, but are not limited to, are as follows: Apples, applesauce (baby food formula only, it contains vitamins), apricots, bananas, berries, bread, cantaloupe, carrots, cherries, corn, dates, dried fruit, eggs (boiled/scrambled), figs, grapes, honey, honeydew, insects (mealworms, crickets), meats (low fat turkey, boiled and skinless chicken, & feeder mice), melons, papaya, peaches (NOT the pits, they are toxic), pears, pineapple, plums, pure fruit juices, raisins, strawberries, and sweet potatoes.

C. Feeding times
Whatever works, really. Some says that feeding them early in the morning and once at night is preferred while others will tell you that leaving food out for them all day long is better, however, make sure you clean out their bowls after 12 hours to ensure that they do not eat rotten food! If your gliders seem hungry after feeding, try to feed them a small amount in the morning or give them more in the evening. Remember to leave fresh water out for them AT ALL TIMES!

DO NOT GIVE your Sugar Glider CHOCOLATE!! As with other animals, during digestion a toxin can be created. It may be harmful to Sugar Gliders as well, and certainly not worth the risk!

V. BONDING

A. Welcome home
So you decided to get a Sugar Glider and have just brought them home, now what? Where do you begin? Everything is going to be strange and new to your Sugar Glider. He has just been whisked away from everything he knew and thrown into a brand new situation. Keeping this in mind, I would suggest you place them in their new house/cage and let them alone for a day. They will have to become used to all of the new sounds, sights, smells, and food that are now part of their home. During this time, it is recommended you try to hand feed your pet some treats he may enjoy (i.e. grapes, nuts or other things). This will help him get used to seeing your face. Make sure only one person handles them for the first few days. Then, when the Sugar Glider is more relaxed, introduce new members of the care taking family. You can even play games by letting your Sugar Glider jump to each person. At this point, the bonding process has begun.

B. The bonding process
Bonding with your Sugar Glider is the easiest part of owning one. It takes some time so be patient and do not force anything. The time frame for bonding can take anywhere from immediately to a few months. One thing I found that helps is to carry your new pet around in a shirt pocket all day. You can give small treats to help speed things up (called "Pocket Training"). During the day you can pet and bond with your Sugar Glider even if he is asleep. He will get used to your scent and touch at the same time. If you do carry him in your shirt pocket be careful not to lean against anything that could possibly injure your pet. Sugar Gliders tend to bond closer to their main caretaker. They can and will accept other people but tend to stay with their main handler. Mine have allowed me to hand them over to someone else and as soon as I started walking away, they jumped right back to me. I have even noticed that mine will react differently depending on the mood I'm in. They seem to be able to sense how I'm feeling. When I have been upset, they tend to stay in my shirt more than normal, occasionally coming out to get me to play. When I'm sad, they come up and tend to want to love on me and let me pet them more. If I am anxious about another person, they do not want to go to that person. I'm not sure if this is true of all Sugar Gliders, but mine seem to know what kind of mood I'm in and how to cheer me up.

C. Training
Yes, you can train your Sugar Glider in a couple different ways, to a certain extent. First of all, decide if you want a pet that stays on you at all times or, one that will freely roam your house. Once you have made this decision, you can begin training. If you want a personal Glider, you need to teach them to stay on your person. As you carry them around they may jump off. Gently pick them up and put them back on you or in a pocket until they settle down. It is ok to let them jump from person to person but not on the floor where they can run away from you. If you want one as a house pet, start in one small room and let him explore. Try to lure him back with treats and then let him continue to check out the room. After you have mastered the small room and feel comfortable calling him back, move on to a larger area. After awhile your pet will run off and explore, climb curtains, jump on you, and then take off again to play! I do not suggest in any way that these animals should have complete freedom in your house. They do need to be SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES when out of their cage.

NOTE: Make sure that your toilet lid and any other water holding devise is closed! We are aware of some Sugar Gliders that have drowned in an open toilet by jumping in and not being able to get out!

VI. HEALTH

A. Symptoms Of An Ill Or Hurt Glider
1. Lack of appetite
2. Lethargy
3. Excessive coughing/sneezing
4. Vomiting or diarrhea
5. Difficulty breathing
6. Dragging hind legs
7. Loss of fur
8. Elevated or lowered temperature

B. Breeding
Sexual maturity varies from Sugar Glider to Sugar Glider and it seems to manifest around 7-15 months of age with some waiting up to 2 years. In the wild, the sexual maturity is approximately 12 months with the females maturing first. One sign on the male that he may be ready is the appearance of the typical bald spot on the top of his head followed by a balding spot on the center of their chest or by the display of the penis for long periods of time.
<img width='1' height='1' Blend for two minutes.

Add in additional liquid and blend for another two minutes.

Pour into a freezer safe bowl with an airtight lid. Feed in the evening close to the time your gliders wake up. Remove the food in the morning, so your gliders don't try to snack on the leftovers during the day (you don't want them eating fruits and vegetables that have been sitting out all night).

2. You can cook the eggs in the microwave - it's faster and less cleanup. Just make sure to use a tall plastic cup and mix the eggs up really well. Microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until they're done.

3. The final HPW Diet mixture will be runny and a bit foamy at the top. This is normal.

4. If you have two gliders, double the recipe to 1 TBSP HPW, 2 TBSP fruits, & 2 TBSP veggies.

5. The calcium:phosphorous ratio of HPW is 1.29:1. Try to select fruits and vegetables that will keep the overall ratio of the complete diet at 1.5-2:1.

6. If using frozen fruits and vegetables, I recommend thawing them in the microwave, cutting them up into small pieces, then mixing the HPW mixture in with them. The HPW will thaw quickly when you mix it in. HPW mixture does NOT need to be microwaved.

6. Australian bee pollen is different from American bee pollen. Australian bee pollen as this is what the sugar gliders eat in the wild.

7. If you are doubling the amount of HPW powder for a nursing female, it is ok to have the other cage-mates eating the same batch.

8. Gliders are messy with their food. Try putting their food dish inside of a "glider kitchen". This can be a plastic igloo on top of a plate or an upside-down plastic container with a hole in the side. This will help keep the mess and the cage smell down and make cleaning the cage MUCH easier.

9. If you need to feed your gliders a few hours early, prepare the diet without thawing the fruits and vegetables. It should be thawed out by the time they wake up.

10. High Protein Wombaroo Diet is one of the approved sugar glider diets designed to be fed as a main course.

11. HPW is designed to be a complete diet when following the feeding instructions above. A dry staple food is not required to supplement this diet, but can be used during the day in case your sugar gliders wake up and need a snack.

Before Bringing Your Glider Home...

Here's what you must have:

Lots of time & love for your glider/s
A big and spacious cage (3ft x 2ft x 2ft -- or larger -- is recommended with 1/2 inch wire spacings, however, keep in mind that the taller it is, the better. I did extensive research on the marsupials because I wanted to be sure that I will be the ideal owner for them -- and that they will be the ideal pets for me.

I suggest that you look them up (google - makes life easier :P and so do the links in my sidebar) and study them if you are interested in getting them as pets. But no worries, I shall be posting up glider care and the rest in a bit.

Okay, so, after two years, I've decided to take the plunge. I'm importing them into Kuching and becoming Kuching's first glider breeder.

Why did I decide to become a breeder?
It's because I have seen very few gliders in Kch and I think that these marvelous animals should be properly introduced to the public.

Why Honey Gliders?
Hmmm.. Well, because I read somewhere that sugar gliders are also known as honey gliders, I don't know how true it is but the name kinda stuck. Quite like how the name sugar bears came about, however, I will not be referring to my sugar gliders as honey gliders, because sugar gliders are sugar gliders. And when you think of honey, you think sweet and adorable -- that pretty much sums up bonded gliders. They are very sweet and super adorable, but only when they are properly bonded.

What is this blog for?
It is for my gliders and also for me to share what I've learnt through experience and research. :)

If you have any questions, do leave a comment or email me and I will answer you asap.
